Naturalism

  • The Encyclopedia of Life - a fantastic resource for knowledge about life on earth.
  • Wayne's Word Online Textbook - a biology professor's personal collection of natural history resources.
  • Zooniverse - citizen science projects that allow you to help scientists conduct studies in biology, physics, and more.
  • Nautilus Live - live-streamed seafloor exploration conducted by a group of researchers controlling an ROV. Many new species are being discovered and documented for the first time as a result of this program; you can see highlights from past expeditions on their YouTube channel.
  • Microsculpture: The Insect Portraits of Levon Biss - a collection of Levon Biss's breathtaking composite images of insects. The website is a joy to navigate and explore.
  • Visdeurbel ("Fish Doorbell") - help fish safely cross a lock from the Netherlands into Germany by answering the "fish doorbell," a small underwater camera that functions like a Ring doorbell. You see a fish at the door, you hit the button and the gate opens to let them swim through. What fun.

Literature

  • Poem-a-Day - read a different poem every day. This is a great way to expand your literary horizons, especially if you're like me and you tend to stick to reading the same writers.
  • The Marginalian - Maria Popova has been providing top-notch writing ad-free on this blog for almost two decades. She is truly a wonderful writer, and her work always inspires me and reminds me to remain curious.
  • Etymology Online - a fantastic resource if you're wondering about the origin of a word or phrase.

Miscellaneous/Unsorted

  • CARI Aesthetics Index - an index of aesthetics from Cassette Futurism to Blob World.
  • The "Sometimes Interesting" Appendix - lots of high-quality posts about abandoned buildings, creepy phenomena, etc. This website used to be the shit when I was in high school. It looks like the site has since been sold to advertisers(☹︎), but the appendix still contains all those cool old articles, like a dusty attic full of artifacts from simpler times.
  • Wolfram's Math Art Directory - Wolfram is pretty well-known as a mathematics resource, but don't overlook the beauty in the "Mathematical Arts" section.
  • Story of Mathematics - this site catalogues the history of mathematics and the different number systems that developed in different regions over time. Interesting stuff.
